GLWF coming to Lakeland
The annual Great Lakes Writers Festival will be celebrating its ten year anniversary on November 1 and 2. Hosted by Fessler Professor of Creative Writing and Poet in Residence at Lakeland College, Karl Elder, the event is free and open to the public. It provides an opportunity for writers to share their work with peers and learn from well known professional writers.

Energy conservation is a leading topic in environmentalism. John Anderson presented a convocation lecture on that topic Tuesday, Oct. 9. He discussed where our energy comes from and what can be done to reduce the amount of energy that is wasted. The theme of his lecture can be summed up in this phrase: think big, create small.

Movie review: Gracie

A movie NOT to watch at home
There have been great sports films. "Gracie" does not fall into this category. The story is cliché, and extremely predictable. The idea of women playing sports in a men's world, circa the 1970's, gripped me. However, my attention was lost almost immediately.

This year's fall play will be The Importance Of Being Ernest. This will be directed by Charlie Krebs, Lakeland's new theatre and speech professor's first Lakeland debut. Krebs is the Director and Samantha Tonn is the assistant director.

More than a fish, more than a sailor

From the language that Earnest Hemingway uses throughout his classic novella, "The Old Man and the Sea," it may appear on the surface to be a simple read (which I cannot deny, it does go by fast). However, I think there is due credit for the multiple layers the story contains.
