Nestled in the corner office of Nash is a new face to admissions. Melissa Jaeger, a Milwaukee native, joined the admissions team shortly before the fall term began.
Jaeger is the Associate Director of Admissions, working with students from Northern Wisconsin, Upper Michigan, and Illinois.
"I work with students and their families to get them through the admission process at Lakeland," said Jaeger. Her job also includes visiting high schools and attending college fairs in her region. One of the main parts of her job, though, is just being there to answer any questions that the parents or students may have.
During the fall season, one never knows when to find Jaeger in her office. High school visits take her on the road for the most part, sometimes visiting five cities in one week.
"I'll have to admit," Jaeger said, "I was a bit nervous about driving to five cities in one week in a state that I knew absolutely nothing about, but what a great experience it was."
Working at a college is nothing new to Jaeger. Right out of college, she went to work at Milwaukee School of Engineering as an admission counselor, where she stayed for three years.
Since her husband got a new job in the Sheboygan area, Jaeger felt it was time to try something new as well. She decided to leave MSOE and venture into the college among the cornfields.
"I like Lakeland a lot. I love the atmosphere of a small school and how welcoming everyone is," Jaeger said.
One of the perks about Jaeger's job is how much variety there is. She gets to meet and interact with many different people, ranging from high school students to parents to student employees.
According to Jaeger, she does things here that she never did at her old job, such as instant messaging with students.
"Instant messaging is really helpful when trying to connect with the students," said Jaeger.
Another new thing to Jaeger is the counselor web blogs. Each counselor in admissions has the option of posting blogs on the web. The web blogs can include anything from stories about their travels to different high schools to bits about Lakeland to important information that prospective students might need.
Jaeger plans on staying at Lakeland as long as they allow her to, even if it means having to further her education to do so.
