On Wednesday February 8, 2006, was the night of the 48th Annual Grammy Awards, the musical equivalence to the academy awards. This was a night of music. This night was anticipated by every musician and the night where talent would be recognized. Yet, it was also the night to wear some of the most outrageous and awful outfits which can cost more than most people's houses or yearly income.

Gorillaz kicked off the show with a semi decent performance of their hit "Feel Good, Inc" before Madonna took over the center of attention halfway through and sang some needed life with her disco comeback "Hung Up". As she was wearing a skin tight purple leotard, the material girl gave a great kick to the boring start of the awards show.

The night was a battlefield between many artists. The main focus was who would take the lead of winning the most awards, Mariah Carey or U2. Yet, those Gods of rock were the winners with five awards, winning their 20th Grammy, while Carey was the definite loser. That is, if you can call somebody who won three awards a loser.

After all, Carey was the comeback queen of the night, nominated for eight awards for her album The Emancipation of Mimi. Overcoming personal difficulties and a hole in her career, Carey won awards for female R&B vocal performance, R&B song and contemporary R&B album.

U2 took the stage, winning five awards, including album of the year, the highest honor to win, for How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. The same CD also earned them three awards last year.

"If you think this is going to go to our head, it's too late," said U2 front man Bono after the group won song of the year for "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own." After beating out Carey for album of the year, Bono told Carey, "You sing like an angel."

The first award was presented by Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys for best female vocal performance. The recipient of the award was a surprised Kelly Clarkson for "Since U Been Gone," beating out Carey and Gwen Stefanie.
