This Thursday, February 23, the students involved in the Lakeland Undergrad Research Experience (LURE) program will be sharing their research projects from this past summer.

Students in the sciences can apply to perform original research over the summer break under the direction of a faculty member.

The students presenting their research will be Rachel Chizek, Tristan Lubinski, Matt Preimesberger and Christopher Stein. Also, Lakeland graduate Adam Westcott will be in attendance.

"The students will be presenting their results along with the posters they have had created," commented Jeffery Schwem, "Any students interested in doing research this summer should definitely attend."

Chizek, Lubinski, Stein, and Westcott will be presenting on the Tardigrade Species research project they preformed.

"The project was really broken into two groups," commented Tristan Lubinski, "Chris and Adam worked on morphological identification of Tardigrades, while Rachel and I worked on molecular ID and phylogenies."

"Adam and Chris preformed surveys and samplings to determine trends where the population was seen. They also found correlations between species and the environment where they are found," continued Lubinski.

"Also, what Rachel and I have done has been done elsewhere, but it is important to have a [DNA] sequence of our population to see how original they are and to compare to what else has been done," remarked Lubinski.

Preimesberger preformed research on Amyloidogenic Peptides. These peptides are thought to initiate several fatal diseases including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Preimesberger used ATR- FTIR along with Congo red staining to observe and obtain qualitative data on the peptides.

Students interested in research like this for the summer should apply by Friday, March 10. They can do so by contacting Greg Smith, Jeffery Schwehm, or Brian Frink.
