Over this past summer I attended SummerFest to see the Trapt concert. Among many of the stage openers was the band Hit by a Bus. Expecting little, I was slightly surprised, so I picked up their newest EP, Detonator.
It sounds like this New Mexico band is influenced by System of a Down, as they are listed among the many influences on the band's Web site. They play heavy cords and include the screaming of System, but then they pull back and play a more relaxed sound.
Most of the music in Detonator is focused around Gio, a female vocalist and the keyboardist of the group. Her voice is amazingly clear, and an example of why there should be more female singers prevalent in the rock genre. Skreech is the other vocalist, as well as guitar, supplying a good voice to balance with Gio.
Other members include N8 at bass, Josh at drums, and Joe as another guitarist. Joe lends to several songs on Detonator with his ability to scream, which helps give it the heavy metal feel.
