When it seemed as though old fashioned war movies were completely out of style, along came Flyboys, a movie based on Americans volunteering for the French military. Entering World War I as the Lafayette Escadrille, these men became the first fighter pilots from the United States.
The movie follows main character, Blaine Rawlings, played by James Franco, through his own personal growth, and romance with a beautiful French woman, Laura, played by Ruth Bradley.
The speed at which the woman learns English is quite impressive, if not unbelievable, taking away from the realism of the film. The overall acting was either poor or meant to be humorous, although it was unclear as to which. However, Captain Thenault, played by Jean Reno, did an excellent job acting and was both a humorous and believable character.
Generally, the characters themselves where well developed and this helped to make up for the occasional sub-standard acting. The movie itself was based on a true story, which added to the film's overall meaning. Also the movie had many aerial battle scenes, which I found to be both exciting and entertaining.
Overall, I enjoyed the film and the old fashioned feel that it had, and would give this film a two out of three fish. This movie when compared to other modern films does not quite stand up. Many may find it disappointing. The acting really needed to be brought up a couple of notches and the realism was lagging.
