Lakeland varsity football certainly made a turn for the better as it began its conference schedule two weeks ago. Faced up against conference foes Greenville and Benedictine, the Muskies did exactly what everyone expected them to do at the beginning of the season: they won.
The Muskies are now 2-3 overall, with a 2-0 record in conference.
Winning their fifth straight conference opener on Sept. 23 against Greenville, 28-13, the team is again in preferable position to begin defending the conference championship, which has been in the Muskie's possession for the past two years.
After the game, Coach Jim Zebrowski reflected upon his team's determination. "We could have come out of the non-conference schedule at 2-1 and had momentum," said Zebrowski, who has coached the team since 2003. "But like I told the guys, 'If you want momentum, take it,' and they did."
Against Benedictine, the Muskie defense recorded amazing numbers, forcing three turnovers and only allowing 93 yards of total offense.
After the victory Zebrowski affirmed, "our defense was great; they never gave up a drive. Every year we've always had a dominant defense in conference play. I challenged this year's defense to step up, and today they rose to the occasion for us."
Although the conference championship is in the crosshairs of Zebrowski, the season-ending injury of junior halfback Shawn Lee may put a damper on the coach's chances and also stir up the players.
"Emotions were flowing for us after Shawn Lee went down with an injury last week," said sophomore linebacker John Wagner. "It shows you that in any game something can happen, so you have to play every game like it may be your last."
Four of the next five games are on the road, beginning with Eureka at 1 p.m. on Oct. 7. The sole exception is on Oct. 21 against conference rival Concordia, which is the homecoming game.
The Concordia University of Wisconsin Falcons are 5-0 overall on the year, and they have outscored opponents 202-47. Winning their most recent game in a conference bout against MacMurray 47-7, the Falcons pose the largest threat to the Muskies chances of maintaining the coveted Cheesebowl.
