The Lakeland athletic department will hold an athletic banquet tonight at 6 p.m. in the Wehr Center Field House to celebrate all the accomplishments of Lakeland teams this past season.
A committee made up of coaches has been working on planning the event for over a year. It will include a dinner and a silent auction with various sports-related items. There will be a parade of seniors from all sports, and each senior will receive a gift from the college.
Chad Schreiber, the chairman of the committee that planned the banquet, said Lakeland used to give seniors a gift, and the banquet will help bring back that tradition. He said there are several goals that the committee hopes to achieve with the event.
"Lakeland pledges itself as a community as much as it does a campus, and it's a community that likes to celebrate things," Schreiber said. "I think in our athletic programs, in the time I've been here, we've had a lot to celebrate and never gotten together to do that.
"Rather than have a volleyball banquet, a basketball banquet, a football banquet, where the people who see each other all year long get to see each other on last time, let's all get together and talk about it and celebrate."
Nate Dehne, vice president for student development, will be the emcee of the event, and Jane Bouche, director of athletics, will hand out the senior gifts along with April Arvan, assistant athletic director, who was inducted into the Lakeland Athletic Hall of Fame this year.
"I hope it's a way for outgoing seniors to feel great about the time they spent here," Schreiber said. "Maybe that's the first step in building a long-term relationship for after they leave here in coming back for alumni events. I think it's connecting all the dots that have always been here."
Schreiber said one long-term goal is bringing in a big-name speaker that would bring people from the community surrounding Lakeland to campus so they can also hear about what's happening with Lakeland athletics.
