It was a very long weekend for the Muskies soccer team. On Saturday, Sept. 26 Lakeland suffered a brutal loss to the three-time defending Northern Athletics Conference Champions Dominican 12-0.

The Stars came out strong, scoring six first-half goals. In the second half, Dominican scored six more with four players scoring two goals or more including four from freshman reserve Tyler Mercier.

On Sunday afternoon, Lakeland played a non-conference game against St. Mary's out of Minnesota. The Muskies started the game off strong, having a 2-0 lead.

Later in the second half the defense struggled to keep shots off goal and, in the 77th and 89th minutes, St. Mary's found the back of the net. This tied the game 2-2. With eight seconds left in the second half, senior forward Ryan Malo dislocated his elbow after being fouled outside the eighteen yard box and had to go the emergency room to have it put back in place. The game went into double overtime and St. Mary's scored in the 105th minute to beat the Muskies 3-2.

"I give (St. Mary's) credit," coach Dave Madsen said. "They're a good team, and if you give them chances, they're going to punish you, and they did."

On Saturday, goalkeeper Ross Soukup had seven saves and in Sunday's game freshman goalkeeper Alex Piekarski had five saves for the Muskies. During the game against St. Mary's, freshman Jake Belknap assisted sophomore Ben Koepsell with a nifty pass into the box in the ninth minute. Koepsell is now tied for the lead in goals on the team with four this fall.

Madsen was disappointed with his team's effort.

"We're just doing what's good enough right now," Lakeland coach David Madsen said. "We built ourselves a good lead and played well for a half, but decided not to put them to work in the second half."

Lakeland's second goal came via an Adam Benson penalty kick drawn by Malo in the 63rd minute.

Lakeland played Concordia Wisconsin on Tuesday, Sept. 29 and lost 1-0 on a 77th minute Falcon goal.

"We played pretty well, and I'm happy to see us playing the way we are capable of playing," Madsen said. "Unfortunately, we came out on the wrong end of the scoreboard today."

The Muskies next game will be on the road, as they travel to Illinois to do battle with conference rival Rockford on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 3:30 p.m.
