The Mountain Goats will blow your mind - again
John Darnielle takes a Biblical theme and runs headlong into honest brilliance

To learn the verse this song is named after adds an entirely new dimension. "His Lord said to him, well done, servant, good and faithful, over a few things thou wast faithful, over many things I will set thee; enter into the joy of thy Lord!"
Darnielle has always been known for his honesty. He built an entire album based on his abusive stepfather and his troubling teen years ("The Sunset Tree") and moves on to albums that discuss drugs and alcoholism and the people that are affected by it. This is why the potency of "The Life of the World to Come" is not a surprise. Darnielle creates masterpieces that we've been trained to expect.
Even for the lazier listener, this CD won't fall short. But it's the hardcore Mountain Goats fans that will get the most out of this album, the ones willing to explore the verses tied to the titles of all the tracks here. It's an album for serious music listeners, and musically might seem too bare for someone looking only for sound. For the rest of us, however, "The Life of the World to Come" does what we've always known Darnielle could do - tell stories, and tell them pretty damn well.
