The Lakeland College music department will perform in their annual Fall Band and Choir Concert this Sunday, Nov. 8 at 3:00 p.m. in the Bradley Fine Arts Center.
The concert will consist of performances from the Frauenchor Choir, Concert Choir, Handbells, and the Concert Band. These four sections of our music department have been working on this concert since the start of the semester.
The concert will be lead by Janet Herrick, professor of music and director of college choirs and handbells, and Russell Pettitt, instructor of instrumental music and director of bands.
It will begin with the Lakeland alma mater and end with the less played Lakeland fight song. The set list for this concert is very diverse given the number of languages the choir will be singing.
"One significant thing that you find, and it's pretty common for our concerts, is that our students sing in many languages. So, we'll be singing in German, French, Russian, Spanish, and Xhosa (an African language) along with Scottish," said Herrick.
Like always, the choir department had enlisted help from other professors and instructors with the pronunciation. This year, Spanish Professor José Ignacio Álvarez-García helped the choir with the Spanish pronunciation.
This year will feature Handbells, playing a premier performance of Aerosmith's "Dream On" in the gallery, and as always Dr. Johnson will be playing the piano in a piano piece, where the audience can see his talents.
Among these performances, there will be a diva quartet featuring four students and as a special treat Megan Pettitt, Lakeland's Instructor of Flute, will be playing both recorder and flute.
The audience will see several students involved in both parts of the concert.
"We have some students who are participating in multiple of those ensembles and some students who participate in only one of those groups," said Pettitt.
The band will play representative band music from the 20th century. An example of this type of style would be Larry Dane's "With Quiet Courage".
The band will end with an interesting piece depicting crazy alligators in Florida.
After the concert there will also be a reception in the gallery. This would be an excellent time to show your gratitude for Lakeland's dedication to the musical arts.
As an extra incentive for attending the Nov. 8 concert, students will be given a convocation credit since this concert is part of the Fine Arts Events.
