Each year, students who are taking a Core III class are required to organize and participate in a Service Learning Project.
This semester, a group of students in the Core III World Health Issues class, taught by Pam Engebretson, assistant professor of general studies, put on a campus-wide coat drive to support the Coats For Kids program. The coat drive ran from Oct. 8 to Oct. 28.
All of the coats that were donated as part of the drive went to the Salvation Army.
"It [the coat drive] is a way to show the correlation between poverty and health issues on a local scale," said senior Steven Carter, who came up with the idea of the coat drive.
Carter had two specific goals for the coat drive. The first was to raise awareness of poverty and health issues and then correlate that to a larger population. The second goal was to get the student body involved actively in helping the community.
"It's a way for them [students] to give back and contribute to their larger community in general," said Carter.
In terms of the future of the coat drive, Carter hopes that others will take the initiative to carry out the project and continue it as a yearly commitment.
"I think that the reality of the needs here in our county came as a big shock to them [the students]. I know that they are really excited about the project and being excited about being a member of the community sounds like a pretty big success to me," said Engebretson.
In addition to the drive, the group of students in the class are volunteering to hand out the collected coats on one of the Salvation Army's distribution days, as well as doing intake for the Further Christmas Program, which provides toys, blankets, hats, mittens, and gifts for families in need.
Other projects in the class include working with a flu shot clinic, volunteering at the Salvation Army soup kitchen, raising funds for the Sheboygan County Cancer Care Fund with the YMCA and the March of the Pink Brigade, organizing, cleaning, and unloading donations at Goodwill, and delivering meals to the elderly with the Meals on Wheels program.

Thank you, core class, for providing this opportunity for families who can truly use coats. My kids have received coats from this type of a coat drive in the past, and we were very thankful for the luxury of having a nice warm coat. (Continued…)
