Ben Chapman, Chris Collins, Jake Frias, David May, and Adam Sutter were the Lakeland wrestling seniors honored before the match started.
"This has been a great group of seniors. The leadership these guys have had will be hard to replace. Collins and May came in first this year and really came right into the team. Their attitudes have been great," said Coach Pete Rogers.
"Sutter has been a leader more by being a competitor. Having a guy that wrestles at the caliber he does really gets the other guys motivated to do their best. Chapman and Frias have been our emotional leaders for some time. They really pushed themselves and took it upon themselves to get the other guys to take their wrestling to a higher level," Rogers said.
After forfeiting the 125 pound weight class, sophomore, Robby Frias helped close the team score with an impressive technical fall against Kurt Kemnitz at the 133 pound weight class to make it 6-5 Concordia.
The Falcon's David Tuomi responded strongly with a major decision over Lakeland's Ricardo Rosas, freshman, in the 141 pound weight class to make the score 10-6 Concordia. Then, Lakeland's Isaac Roberson, junior, put on a takedown show against Concordia's Steve Taylor at the 149 pound weight class to help narrow the score 10-9 Concordia.
At the 157 pound weight class, Lakeland's Ben Chapman won by a technical fall over Chris Hamberger 18-2, giving Lakeland the 14-10 lead. Lakeland junior, Derek Flok, received a forfeit at the 165 pound weight class to put Lakeland further up with a 19-10 lead over Concordia.
Lakeland senior Jake Frias fought a grueling match against Concordia's Josh Nord at the 174 pound weight class. Frias wrestled at the 174 pound weight class instead of his normal 165 pound class. Despite the change in weight Frias dominated most of the match until Concordia's Nord came back to win by one.
"It was a tough loss, but I have time left to make up for this. I just have to wrestle every match like it's my last. I'm looking forward to this upcoming weekend," said Frias.
