The convention, which is sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press, was attended by 182 student journalists from 26 schools throughout the Midwest.
Danny Spatchek, sports editor, won the fourth-place feature writing award for his story about Professor Jeff Schwehm titled "The Saints, the team that really hit home: Biochemistry professor discusses Katrina angst, Saints' success" in the Feb. 11 issue.
Jessica Lillie, editor-in-chief, won the fifth-place award in feature writing for her story, "Professors reveal their alternate lifestyles: The Kuhn ranch turkey farm promotes sustainability" from the Dec. 3, 2009 issue.
Lakeland staff attending the three-day event were Spatchek; Lillie; Brittney Sandberg, managing editor; Ashley Paulson, advertising manager; Jim Giese, copy editor; Ramsay Crawford, contributing writer; and Martha Schott, faculty adviser.
"Lakeland can be very proud of these students," said Schott. "In the feature writing category, our students competed with many of the biggest and best schools in the Midwest, many of which offer strong journalism and communication programs.
"It's interesting that upon returning from this convention where keynote speakers and breakout sessions stressed that the future for journalism is online, we had Danny Spatchek's story on Jeff Schwehm picked up by the Times-Picayune in New Orleans and received 2,000 hits on our website," said Schott. "Small schools with good journalists can now have a voice on the national media scene."
Lakeland's entry for the "Best of Show" award was the Feb. 11 issue. The first place award in the "Best of Show" category for non-weekly newspapers at four year schools went to Cornell College in Iowa, and the second place award went to Ripon College in Wisconsin.
